| Name: | Taro Kagami |
|---|
Fandom: Death Note: Pilot / Episode 0
Age: 13
Sexuality: N/A, but presumably Straight
Appearance: Taro is a pretty average pre-teen. He's on the small side (about four feet or higher) and has neck-length dark brown hair. He dresses in blue jeans and a white shirt with a blue overshirt. He is a rather meek and antisocial child who gets beaten up on a lot at school due to his size, and is thus easily frightened and prone to sudden outbursts and yelling.
Taro is a very loud child. He yells a lot, and tends to overreact. His eyes are very round and wide, and he has an aura of pure innocence about him.
Personality: Taro Kagami is pretty much a loner; he spends a lot of time walking alone, tries not to cause trouble at school, and mostly pours his heart out when writing in his diary at home. He loses this diary, and is quite pleased when he finds the Death Note on the street. (Interestingly, Taro is initially free of suspicion because 'Death Note' is written on the cover in English and he has very little knowledge of the language, being Japanese.)
Taro mostly writes about the day-to-day events of his life. He has a morbid curiosity about what the Death Note can do, but similarly, the idea horrifies him and he has nightmares constantly after using it. He remains adamant at first that he never intended to kill the people he wrote into Death Note, and feels horribly remorseful until Ryuk gives him the Death Eraser.
Taro is, as mentioned, a child of extremes. He tackles his friend Miura when he finds him writing into the notebook, and gets the same friend to write his name down in front of police to prove it works. He screams under pressure, and can get very sweaty and shifty-eyed when he thinks he is in trouble. Briefly, after overcoming his fear of the Notebook, Taro shows signs of a minor, developing hero complex; mentioning that he can't help but wonder how the notebook could used to rid the world of evil people. After dying and being brought back to life, Taro seems like a changed young boy; he doesn't say, but his face tells it all; the world of death is not pretty.
Background: Once, in a time similar to ours, there existed an unseen Realm populated by Death Gods, or "Shinigami". They watched down on us, writing down the names of humans into their pocket notebooks or "Death Notes", which they wrote names into simply to take the human's otherwise extra amount of remaining lifespan and add it to their own. A low rank loser named Ryuk realizes that while flying around in the human world, his book fell out of his pocket, and sees if he can find it.
Unfortunately, it is first picked up by a 13 year old innocent boy named Taro Kagami, who decides to write in it as a diary (not knowing what it is). He comes home from school after being bullied and writes the names of the bullies while writing about the rest of his day; the next day, he is shocked when he class is informed of the two boys dying of freak heart attacks. Not able to believe it, Taro repeats his previous actions, having been bullied by three new children that day. The same results follow, and Taro realized that "Death Note" literally means "Murder Notebook". Horrified, Taro is then greeted by Ryuk, who has finally located him. He already has a new book, and explains the rules of the one Taro is holding, saying that he's welcome to keep it and use it as he sees fit.
The police show up to ask Taro a few questions, and Taro even makes a plan to write their names in the Notebook (but does not).
A few nights later, Taro is still haunted by the classmates he killed, and Ryuk offers him a ticket out of his nightmares; the "Death Eraser", a tool for humans using the Death Note which can erase any name in the Book and bring the kids back to life. (Provided, Ryuk adds, they haven't been cremated yet.) Taro does so immediately, and a few days later the boys are back in class, being investigated by two detectives named Takagi and Yamanaka. But all five students are killed by heart attacks again, along with both detectives in front of the class, and Taro isn't the culprit! It's his classmate, the loser Miura. Taro manages to stop Miura and the two take the notebook to the two detectives after reviving them and erasing all the kids names. To prove its potency, Taro has Miura write him into the notebook himelf, and after proving its real power, is revived.
After the Notebook's existence is sworn into secrecy between him, Miura and the police, it is burned in a fire along with the Eraser. As they're walking home from the station, Ryuk asks Taro one thing that he can't bring himself to answer; '
